The inaugural Research on Teaching Symposium showcases Research on Teaching projects being done here at Western. It also provides the opportunity for faculty members, librarians and archivists, and graduate students who wish to learn more about Research on Teaching or who have considered doing such scholarship to meet and interact with colleagues who have completed Research on Teaching projects. The symposium will feature presentations by two recipients of the 2010 Research on Teaching Small Grants award. Carroll Iwasiw of the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing will speak on her project, “Writing Levels of Year 1 Students in Western-Fanshawe Collaborative BScN Program.” Also, Kathy Hibbert and Roz Stooke of the Faculty of Education will report on their project, “Supporting Graduate Students’ Writing in Curriculum Studies.” The Symposium will also feature a poster session with completed research being presented by faculty members and librarians from the Arts & Humanities, Education, Health Sciences, Science, the Schulich School, and Western Libraries.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) will offer six webinar sessions on “The Art of Writing a CIHR Application” in April 2012. Last year, this webinar was offered exclusively to members of the Canadian Association of University Research Administrators (CAURA) with immense success. Now, CIHR is offering this webinar to the entire research community (including researchers and research institution staff who support researchers).
In this webinar, participants will learn some tips and get insights for writing a successful application for current competitions and programs offered at CIHR, from the planning stages through writing and submitting a CIHR application. (Please note that the technical aspects of how to apply using ResearchNet will NOT be covered in this webinar.)
Each 90 minute webinar will include approximately 45 minutes of presentation, plus 45 minutes of questions and answers from participants. Participants will also be provided with an electronic document containing application writing tips and insights not covered in the presentation.

The Notification of Intent (NOI) to apply for an Insight Grant is now mandatory. NOIs must be submitted directly by the applicants to SSHRC via the online system by August 15th, 2012. An applicant who has not submitted an NOI by this date will be ineligible to submit the full application in the October 2012 competition.
In addition to basic information, an applicant must submit a one-page Summary of the Proposed Research. This Summary must include:
• the objectives of the research
• the proposed methodology; and
• the anticipated significance and impacts of the proposed research.
The NOI form will be available on SSHRC’s website by mid-June.

Description: Events/activities may focus on, but are not limited to, the following:
- Education of groups such as patients, health professionals, community organizations, policy-makers, the general public;
- Knowledge dissemination that will inform practice, clinical care, partnership best practices, policy and decision making;
- Dissemination and/or discussion of research findings at scientific meetings, workshops, conferences, congresses or symposia.
Eligibility: Applicants must be eligible to hold a research grant at UWO and the Nominated Principal Applicant must be one of the following:
- An independent researcher
- A knowledge user
- A trainee
- A supervisor
- An activity/event coordinator affiliated with a Canadian non-governmental not-for-profit organization, and/or a community leader.
Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development & Services and are to be accompanied by a completed ROLA application.
